Tsarnaev was taken into custody without incident shortly before 6 p.m. local time (9 p.m. ET). He was being held at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston under armed guard.

He faces federal charges of using weapons of mass destruction resulting in death and malicious damage to property by means of an explosive device.

The FBI released photos of Tsarnaev and his brother Tamerlan, 26, who died during the shootout. Both men were wearing dark clothing and backpacks.
